Tony
B. J. was relinquished by his owner, a client of ours who could no longer care for him. We decided to take him in since he's an older boy and we thought we'd have better luck finding him a home here. He wanted no part in leaving us though! We tried him out in two different homes, and unfortunately, he didn't get along with other animals. So we decided to have our own hospital resident and he lives here with us. Maybe you saw him when he tried to get up to the reception area! We love him a lot and he's even saved another cat's life by donating his blood! Recently, we decided for his safety to adopt him to a great home. We found a person who has no pets, so he doesn't have to worry about other animals. He is doing just great at his new home, and he still visits us. Here are some pictures that we've taken.

Calvin was relinquished by his owners as an eight week old puppy due to monetary concerns involved with the uncertain illness that had caused him to fail to thrive. The hospital ran diagnostics tests and it was determined that he had a liver shunt. This is a congenital and fatal condition. The overwhelming support of the community, including 10 year old Erik Hohman, who donated the proceeds of his Lemonade Stand to the Calvin Fund enabled Calvin to have surgery at CSU Veterinary Hospital on May 2nd. A world famous surgeon, Dr. Monnet, performed the operation, with the help of his highly skilled staff. However he was unable to repair the shunt. Calvin is at home recovering from surgery with his new owner, our head technician Stephanie Bartlett. He grows stronger and more frisky every day. He will remain on a special diet and medication to combat the effects of his illness.
This adorable little kitten was brought in from someone who found him in a parking lot. He was very sick and if they hadn't brought him in, he probably wouldn't have lasted the night. He was very skinny and dehydrated, and his eyes were glued shut from discharge from a severe upper respiratory infection. After some tender loving care and medications, he has turned around, is putting on weight and is acting like a playful normal kitten again! One of our techs adopted him and he's very happy now.
Meet Enoch, a 1 year old mix. He lives in the mountains and panicked during one of the storms we had in June. He ran away from his home and was hit by a truck. The driver stopped and tried to find him, but couldn't because of the fog and bad weather. The owner ended up finding him 4 days later! He had fallen down a ditch and he couldn't move due to a broken pelvis. Animal control transported him here where we took x-rays and started to clean his wounds. His owner is unemployed and doesn't have the money to help him, but they love each other dearly and he's an amazing dog, so we are trying to do the best we can. He has a severe open wound on his side which needed surgery to repair, and our generous orthopedic surgeon repaired his pelvis at a reduced cost. The wound on his side is going to take a lot of work and time to heal. He is on antibiotics and is getting better and better at putting weight on his back legs. He will have to be hospitalized for a while so we can take care of the wound, and watch for more infection.
Here's Enoch's Diary:
6/25/04: What a week this has been! On the 18th, I ran away from home because a thunderstorm scared me. I ran across the street and was hit by a truck. The driver couldn't find me and I laid there for about 4 days. My owner found me and had animal control transport me to Care Animal Hospital. I don't remember much of this, but this is what they tell me. They took x-rays and found that the right side of my pelvis was broken. I had a lot of abrasions and a big open wound on my right side. The next day, I was feeling a little better and ate for my doctors, which seemed to make everyone happy! Yesterday I stood up for the first time in a long time! I also had my pelvis repaired by a very generous orthopedic surgeon who did my surgery for a reduced cost. Today I had surgery to repair the wound on my side. They don't know if this will work because the skin was very damaged. Cross your fingers!
7/2/04: This was a very hard week for me. I wasn't sure I was going to make it. My wound was very infected. But the great doctors and staff didn't give up on me. By the 28th, I was feeling a little better. I even got to go outside and I was so happy about that! I really hate it when they change my bandages and clean up my wound, but I know they are just trying to help, so I put up with it like a good dog. I can walk pretty well as long as someone supports my back end a little bit. My right foot doesn't want to work, I'm walking on my knuckles, but hopefully that'll get better soon. My owner has come to visit me and that makes me really happy! I've missed him so much.
7/9/04: I'm getting better and better with every day! I get up to greet everyone who wants to meet me. They have made a special "cage" for me so I can be close to them all day. It's just baby gates and sometimes they let me hang out up in the reception area in this "cage" so I can say "hi" to everyone that comes in. I'm walking so much better - especially outside where the ground isn't so slippery. I love to eat, and I'm starting to gain some weight back. The same surgeon who fixed my pelvis is now helping with my wound. Unfortunately, my skin was so damaged that a lot of it fell off, which looks a little scary, but they tell me it will heal with time. I trust them, they are all so great to me. They tell me that people who don't even know me are donating money to help with all my treatment. I just want to thank everyone - I knew people were great!
7/16/04: This week was great. I'm acting more and more like myself. I'm still getting to eat puppy food to gain more weight and people are still visiting. I'm pretty sure everyone here has fallen in love with me! They say my wound is looking good and is coming along nicely. Next week they will start Phase 1 of repairing my side, now that the skin is healthier.
7/23/04: This week was pretty busy. On the 17th, I got to go to my favorite doctor's house so I could get out of this hospital for a few hours. That was so fun! Two days later I had the first surgery to help the wound on my back. The surgery went well. I've completely recovered from that one now and I'm back up front to greet people. I've learned that if I whine, I get attention! It's great. Last night it was raining so they had to make me a raincoat so my bandages didn't get wet. That was interesting. My second surgery for my wound will be either Monday or Tuesday. I'm looking more and more like a normal dog!
7/30/04: I became even more famous this week! On Wednesday, I was on Channel 7 News for a little story on me. It's kind of neat that I was on tv! Otherwise, this week was pretty laid back. I continue to have my bandage changed every 1-2 days. I'm only on one antibiotic now - they think they're tricking me by stuffing it in canned food, but I know. I got to go home with Dr. Mich again this past weekend which was a lot of fun! On Monday, I was fitted for a splint that will help my foot when I walk. You can see what it does on my Page of Pictures. Today they are coming back with the finished product. I can't wait to walk normally again! My next surgery for my back wound will be in about a week. We decided to wait until the right side healed more. It's coming along though!
8/6/04: This week was pretty mellow. I'm getting my bandage changed every other day. I like to bark and whine at people who walk by me without saying "hi" - of all the NERVE!! I got my new boot a few days ago and I'm still getting used to it. I'll have my next surgery late next week, I think, and then I'll be closer to going home. Thanks for checking up on me!
8/13/04: I had surgery again this week. They closed up a little bit more of the wound, but they also had to fix the right side again. I developed an infection and some of the sutures didn't hold. I'm on more antibiotics again, but they put them in my canned food, so it's not that bad. This time I recovered a lot faster and I was eating and walking again that same night! My shoe kept slipping and so they fixed that too. Very soon there will be pictures of the results of this last surgery on my Page of Pictures, so check back.
8/25/04: Sorry I haven't written in a while. I've been having a pretty good time lately. Dr. Mich took me to the park this past Saturday and I had so much fun! Diane took me home with her for a few hours on Sunday, so I wouldn't have to spend all afternoon in my kennel. I got to play in her back yard and hang out with her dogs. I had surgery again on the 23rd and Dr. Mich closed up more of my wound. She was able to close up more than she expected, so hopefully I'll only need one more surgery!! I'm so excited and my dad is happy too. He visited yesterday and we got to relax outside in the sun. My Page of Pictures has been updated so you can see more clearly how well the wound is coming together. It's pretty amazing. I'll write more next week!
9/5/04: So, things are going really well for me. My wound is so small now, it's hard to imagine that it was so big before! I've been going to the park with Dr. Mich and today I got to hang out in her back yard with her and her dog, Griffin. Yesterday and later this afternoon, I get to go to Diane's house so I'm not all alone during Labor Day. My shoe is working out great, I'm pretty good at walking on it now. We think maybe I'll have my last surgery this coming week. I hope so, I'm so tired of bandage changes! It'll be nice to look like a normal dog again, too.
9/11/04: Well, I had my very last surgery!!! There is one spot that couldn't be closed, but it'll heal in on it's own, since it's small. Now my hair can try to grow back in and I'll look like a normal dog! And just in time for winter, hopefully. I'll be going home in a few weeks, after the incisions heal up. My dad is building me an enclosure so I can't run out of the yard again. I think I've learned my lesson. My final pictures are on my picture page so you can see how great I look now.
9/30/04: Ok, I thought I had my last surgery before, but I just had my REAL last surgery this past Monday. Now I am completely closed and can go home very soon! I'm so excited and my pictures have been updated so you can see me now. It will be nice to go home, but I'm going to miss everyone so much. I'm used to so much attention now that, I admit, I've gotten a little spoiled. Soon I will have a yard to run in again and I will be with my dad, and hopefully I can come visit. I will write again before I leave to say goodbye!
10/13/04: It's finally my last day here... I get to go home with my Daddy, and I'm so happy! It's such a big deal I'm going to be on tv again! Channel 7 came out to do another story on me. I'm also sad because I'll miss everyone here so much. Thanks to all the people who have donated money and/or visited me. I love all the staff who have taken such great care of me! Thanks to Officer Paczosa, the animal control officer who brought me to this hospital, and who will be checking up on me to see how I'm doing. All the doctors, especially Dr. Mich who did all my skin surgeries, and Dr. Kerrihard who fixed my pelvis so long ago. All the techs who took care of me and receptionists who loved me, walked me, and let me hang out up front with them. Paula and Katia who were here after everyone else left the hospital. Anyone who welcomed me into their homes so I wasn't so lonely on the weekends - Dr. Mich, Stephanie, Tammis, Diane, and Marla. Thanks to Martin Kaufman for making me my shoe which helps me to walk normally, and is helping it to heal. I know I will come visit, but I will miss you all very much.
Forrest was a pretty sick cat when his owners brought him in to us. He had been shot with a bb gun in the right flank. The pellet had gone through the intestines, spilling bacteria throughout the normally sterile abdomen. This caused a major infection inside which made him very sick. We had to go in surgically to remove part of the affected intestine and flush out the abdomen. His owners couldn't afford the treatment, but we knew he had a chance, so his owners decided to give him up to us. He was hospitalized with IV fluids and antibiotics and he recovered. We named him Forrest ("I got shot in the buttocks"-Forrest Gump). We found him a new home with one of our clients who had just lost his cat to lymphoma. He's very happy and healthy now, and we get to see him every year for his annual exam!
When Greg arrived at our hospital, he was just 3 months old and had fallen from a 2-story balcony and fractured his leg. His owner knew she would not be able to afford the surgery to fix the break. She gave him up to us so we could care for him and find him a new home. He's incredibly social and affectionate and we all fell in love with him. His leg has been fixed and he was neutered at the same time. He found a home very quickly, and it's not hard to see why from his picture!
Henry was brought in by his owners in a coma. His diabetes mellitus had become out of control, and his blood sugar was so high, he had reached a stage called diabetic ketoacidosis. After many days of treatment on IV fluids and hospitalization, his owners could no longer afford to treat him, and they were considering euthanasia. We knew he just needed more time, and we convinced the owners to relinquish him to our hospital so that we could continue his treatment and find him a home when he recovered.
After a few weeks, he was acting like a cat again! He began sitting up and grooming himself. One of our technicians, Diane, fell in love with him throughout his stay here, and after some thinking, took him home to join her animal family.
Along with his diabetes, he developed food allergies and restrictive cardiomyopathy. Unfortunately, in October of 2003, he passed away, but Care For Strays gave him 3 extra years of happiness. He was one great cat and taught us a lot.
Kohn Tai was given up by his owners when they could no longer care for him. He acts shy, but as soon as you open his cage door, he's a total sweetheart begging for head scratches! His eyes are crossed, but he can see very well. We cleaned up his teeth and cared for him until we could find a loving home for him. Luckily, we found a client of ours who welcomed him into her home!
Maple is a 3 year old Sheltie. He has epilepsy which is a condition controlled with medications. Although these medications must be given everyday, he will still lead a normal full happy life. He found a home with one of our technicians who fell in love with him!
His name is now Pacey and he has gone almost 1 year since his last seizure. We are using acupuncture along with medications to control his epilepsy. He has also lost a whopping 13 pounds since he was adopted and can run and play again. He has a puppy sister now who has taught him how to play with his canine friends.
This is a rabbit that was brought in to us by someone who found her under his porch. We could not find her owners. She's extremely friendly and likes to play with cats and dogs! We spayed her took care of her until we could find her a home. One of our doctors, Dr. Donna Harris, loves rabbits and took her home to join her family!
Max was a stray brought into us by someone who was concerned about him. His left eye was ulcerated and he a had some “war wounds” from being in a cat fight. Through Care For Strays, we vaccinated him, neutered him, and cleaned his teeth. He was adopted and is doing great!
One of our clients found Munch on the side of a road. She was only 4 weeks old, very underweight and dirty, so how they spotted her is a mystery! She was pretty scared and weak, her lip was torn, her right front leg hurt, head trauma, a matted eye and she had an upper respiratory infection! Even with all that, she made it through a few tough days with some treatment and tender loving care. One of our technicians fell in love with her and adopted her. Now she's a feisty, healthy furrball. You'd never know she was the same cat!
Salem came in not being able to walk on his left hind leg. He also had a major wound on his right hind leg. He most likely was hit by a car but we are not sure. His owners could not pay for surgery, so he was relinquished to us so we could use our Care For Strays fund to fix him. Dr. Kerrihard fixed the fracture and Dr. Harris took care of the wound.
He found a home with one of our technicians and is doing very well now.
Sinatra was brought to us by one of our clients. He used to hang out around their house and ask for attention. We all fell in love with his humorous antics! As active as he was, he'd be just as happy to sit in your lap. We neutered him (it was a little more complicated than usual, because one of his testicles was still in his abdomen), and we also removed a broken canine tooth, and cleaned up some war wounds from being an outdoor kitty. He was adopted by one of our clients who saw our sign up at the front reception area. He is doing well and loves his new home!
Meet Sunshine, a 12-year old lab. She acts like a 2-year old, very full of energy and happiness. She's good with other dogs and cats, and she is a little shy around kids. She has a painful back so she can't do stairs very well. She found a home with one of our technicians.
Two weeks ago, an animal control officer brought in a tiny black and white kitten to Care Animal
Hospital. She suspected that a car had hit him. Dr. Mandy Molliconi examined this seriously injured kitten and determined that he had urine in his abdomen as well as an injured rear leg. Emergency surgery was performed and a tear in his bladder was repaired. The wound on his rear leg was also repaired, and he was neutered. Miraculously, the kitten was purring and eating that evening. Named Tony by our staff, this sweet kitten needs surgery on his broken hip. This surgery will cost approximately $1,000, and our “Care For Strays” fund will cover half of the surgery and the hospital will donate the other half. If you can help this kitten, send your checks made out to “Care For Strays” and note “Tony’s surgery” on the notation line at the bottom of the check.
Update: 09/14/2006
Tony is scheduled for surgery tomorrow to fix his broken hip. We are still in need of funds to assist us in paying for the treatment. Thank you!
Update 10/27/06
Tony has found a great home with Jen K., one of our certified technicians. She says that he has become the "amazing flying feline," and is able to leap tall bookshelves in a single bound! He's recovered from surgery very well, although he still walks with a bit of a "John Wayne" stagger. Tony's favorite hobbies are tripping his new owner, playing with his older brother's beard (picture coming soon), and living life to its fullest!
