I joined the Care Animal Hospital family in April of 1995 after graduating from Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology in Denver. My husband Chris and I were raised in the Westminster area so we were fortunate to go to work in the community we’d always known. I worked full-time for Care for seven years as head technician and hospital manager, and now work part-time on the weekends. Chris is a firefighter for the Arvada Fire Protection District. Presently, we are owned by four pugs, two cats, a cockatiel, and a crazy gang of fish. Austin, our first “child”, is about 14 years old. We adopted him in 1997 from the Larimer County Humane Society after he was found wandering the streets of Ft. Collins. Shortly after losing our pug puppy to Pug Dog Encephalitis in 1999, Minnie found us while I was doing relief work for Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital. Denver Animal Control had picked her up after getting in a dogfight from which she developed three herniated discs in her neck. She is about 12 years old now and since surgery is not the best option for her, Dr. Mich has worked with us to manage her condition and chronic pain with medication, massage, and acupuncture. Chewy is four years old and we adopted him from the Colorado Pug Rescue in 2002. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was progressively going blind from congenital cataracts, which became very apparent when we tried to get him involved in agility. Dr. Chavkin at the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado performed a successful cataract surgery on Chewy’s left eye in June 2004, making him feel like a new man. Our newest pug addition is three-year-old Chachee. She has epilepsy and was having seizures when we got her in 2003, but Dr. Garnett helped us devise a good combination of medications and she has been seizure-free for several months.
At nearly 20 years old, our cat Midnight is the eldest member of the group. She has hyperthyroidism that we are treating with oral medication, but other than that, she is doing fairly well considering her age. Our other cat Jack is the youngest member at two years old. We adopted him from the Adams County Animal Shelter. He desperately wants to play with Midnight, but since she’s way past her active playing days, he’s opted to play games of chase with Chewy and Chachee.
Over the years, my interest and love for animals has led me to volunteer for several organizations including the Denver Dumb Friend League, Colorado Horse Rescue, and the mammal’s department at Colorado’s Ocean Journey. Our love of the Pug breed led Chris and I to be active volunteers with the Colorado Pug Rescue, and I’m also a member of the Rocky Mountain Pug Dog Club. You can always find us at the spring and fall “Pugs in the Park” picnics at Adams County Fairgrounds. Currently I am a part-time college student attending Metropolitan State College of Denver in an attempt to complete my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology with an emphasis in Zoology. In our free time, my husband and I like movies, playing Mah Jongg, and relaxing in our hot tub. We also enjoy the outdoors and have taken several trips to Lake Powell where we enjoy boating and kayaking. Some more pictures below. Click on the picture to see a larger view!
